
Janice Barringer
Janice Barringer received early training in her native Florida, where she studied ballet and later tap, jazz, and acrobatics. As a young adult, her primary focus became ballet, leading her to live in NYC, where her main teacher was David Howard at Harkness House. As a performer for twenty years, she served as a principal dancer with the Baltimore City Ballet, the Maryland Ballet, and the Theatre of Annapolis, also performing with the New York Dance Theatre. She and her partner, Edward Stewart, appeared as guest artists in companies nationwide and at The Kennedy Center. During her career, Janice was featured in a Public Television special, “Dance In America,” participated in performances honoring two U.S. Presidents, served as spokesperson and lead dancer in a Kimberly-Clark commercial, and danced with The Baltimore Symphony Orchestra in educational concerts.
As a teacher, Janice Barringer has taught for Harkness House, Steps on Broadway, Ballet Hispanico, Alvin Ailey American Dance Center, Eglevsky Ballet, and Pace University. Janice has also taught for numerous dance conventions/teacher seminars such as MusicWorks Dance Teacher Connection, DanceMakers Convention, Dance Educators of America, Dance Masters of America, Tremaine Dance Conventions, Al Gilbert Seminars, and Dance Caravan. She is an active and invaluable content creator for Music Works Unlimited (formally Stepping Tones) in Los Angeles, CA. Janice is presently on the staff of Eglevsky Ballet and The Pace University Dance Department in NYC.
Janice is well-known as the author of The Pointe Book, the Princeton Book Company’s popular book on pointe training and pointe shoes. Her First, Second, Third, and Fourth Editions of The Pointe Book are world-renowned. She is the co-author (with Thalia Mara) of the celebrated ballet book On Pointe. She has written numerous articles for Dance Magazine, Pointe Magazine, Dancer Magazine, and notable Dance Teacher magazines. Nine of her articles have been cover stories.
