Bring focused, in-depth tap faculty training directly to your studio.
Building a Strong Tap Department is designed to help studio owners develop stronger tap teachers, a more structured curriculum, greater consistency among faculty, and clearer student progression from level to level.
The training is built around the Al Gilbert Tap Syllabus and goes beyond simply learning the exercises. Darryl shares teaching techniques and insights passed on to him personally by Al Gilbert, along with the practical knowledge and teaching methods he has developed through more than 40 years of teaching the syllabus.
Who Is the Training For?
The training is designed for the people who work directly with your tap students, including:
- Studio owners
- Tap teachers
- Co-teachers
- Teaching assistants
The studio owner decides who participates.
Choose Your Training Module
Each module focuses on one section of the Al Gilbert Tap Syllabus and is scheduled as one training day of approximately 4–6 instructional hours.
Choose the module—or modules—that best serve the needs of your studio:
Beginner levels, typically for ages 4–8
Intermediate levels, typically for ages 9–12
Introduction to advanced-level work, typically for ages 13+
Advanced and pre-professional levels, typically for ages 15+
Studios may select one module or combine multiple modules over consecutive training days.
Customized to Your Studio
A short pre-booking questionnaire helps identify your studio’s current tap program, your faculty’s experience, and the areas you would most like to strengthen.
Within each selected module, the training can emphasize the areas that are most important to your faculty.

What Your Studio Receives
- In-depth faculty training in each selected module
- Practical teaching tips and insights to strengthen how the material is taught
- Technique notes for the selected levels
- The corresponding Al Gilbert technique music and instructional video materials
- Your choice of CD/DVD materials or digital downloads
The studio owner is also welcome to video-record the training sessions for future internal faculty reference.
Training Fees
A four-day engagement covers all four training modules, taking your faculty through the complete Al Gilbert Tap Syllabus progression from Pre-Level through Grade 9.
Booking & Travel Information
Travel Expenses
Airfare: MusicWorks arranges the air travel required for the engagement. The host studio is billed for the actual airfare cost.
Driving: For studios within driving distance, the driving charge is calculated in advance based on round-trip mileage using the current IRS standard mileage rate for business use.
Hotel: The host studio arranges and pays for lodging when required. Refundable or changeable reservations are recommended whenever possible.
Ground Transportation: The host studio provides or pays for necessary transportation while Darryl is in the host city.
Meals: No per diem is charged.
Reserving Your Training Date & Payment
A $250 non-refundable reservation fee secures your event date and is applied toward your total training fee.
If your date needs to change before final payment, the reservation fee may be transferred one time to a mutually agreed-upon new date.
Once travel arrangements are finalized, MusicWorks will send an invoice for the remaining training balance plus the applicable travel cost.
Payment is due within 12 hours of receiving the invoice. If payment is not received within that time, MusicWorks may cancel travel arrangements and release the reserved date.
If Your Plans Change
After final payment, your training fee may be transferred one time to a mutually agreed-upon rescheduled date within 12 months of the original event.
If the studio cancels and does not reschedule, the reservation fee and training fees paid are non-refundable. If a rescheduled engagement is canceled again by the host studio, the training fee is forfeited.
The host studio is responsible for additional travel expenses resulting from a studio-requested date change or cancellation.
Training module selections may be changed up to one day before Darryl’s scheduled travel date.
Travel Disruptions
If weather, airline disruption, or another circumstance outside either party’s control prevents travel, the training will be rescheduled with no additional training fee.
Available airline refunds or credits will be applied toward replacement travel. If an additional unrecoverable airfare expense remains, MusicWorks and the host studio will share that additional expense equally.
If MusicWorks Must Cancel
If MusicWorks must cancel for a reason within its control, the host studio may choose a mutually agreed-upon rescheduled date or a refund of the training fees paid.
If a refund is selected, the training fees paid to MusicWorks will be refunded within 14 days.
Any unrecoverable travel expense resulting from a MusicWorks-initiated cancellation is the responsibility of MusicWorks.
Booking Lead Time
For the best availability and travel options, booking at least one month in advance is recommended. Shorter lead times may be accommodated when scheduling allows.
