Pre-Ballet

Pre-Ballet is the second level of Janice Barringer’s Ballet Technique and is designed for students ages 7–9. Although this level is called “Pre-Ballet,” it is not intended for preschool-aged children. Instead, it serves as an essential bridge into formal classical ballet training.

At this stage, students should be able to focus, follow directions, and participate respectfully in a structured learning environment. A year or two of school or beginning dance experience is beneficial, as it helps children learn to stand in lines or circles, listen attentively, and understand classroom expectations. With these behavioral foundations in place—and a student’s desire to study ballet—they are ready to begin developing the strength, discipline, and physical awareness necessary for more serious ballet training.

This instructional video provides teachers with clear demonstrations of each exercise, along with Janice Barringer’s detailed explanations, supporting the development of strong early technique and sound classroom habits.

Video Playtime: 1 hr, 11 min.

Note: The music heard in the video appears as part of the instructional demonstration only. A separate classroom-ready music recording is available as its own MusicWorks product.
