Grade 4 Ballet Technique

Grade 4 Ballet Technique is the ninth and final level in Janice Barringer’s Ballet Syllabus and is designed for advanced dancers preparing for the highest level of studio-based classical training. This level reflects what is traditionally recognized as an advanced ballet class, demanding strength, precision, artistry, and refined technical control.

At the barre, dancers work through a fully developed advanced warm-up that includes complex cambrés, tendu and dégagé combinations with épaulement, pas de cheval, flic flac, grand rond de jambe en l’air, ballonné, ballotté, and a variety of entrechats and batterie.

In the center, adagio requires strong placement and sustained control, followed by expansive pirouette combinations that challenge balance, coordination, and directional changes. Petit allegro combinations are fast and intricate, while grand allegro includes advanced jumps such as cabrioles and grand jeté with développé.

Turning vocabulary expands significantly at this level: fouettés and traveling fouettés are taught for female dancers; turns in second and tour en l’air are developed for male dancers. Across-the-floor work integrates demanding transitional steps, sissonnes, and coupé jeté en tournant, refining both technique and performance quality.

This instructional DVD provides clear demonstrations and in-depth explanations from Janice Barringer, giving teachers a reliable, comprehensive resource for presenting advanced classical material with clarity and consistency.

Video Playtime: 1 hr, 12 min.
