Grade 2 Ballet Technique
Grade 2 is the fourth level of Janice Barringer’s Ballet Technique and is designed for students ages 10–12 who are ready to move into a solid early-intermediate stage of classical training. This level expands both technical difficulty and artistic sophistication, preparing dancers for the increasing demands of Grade 3.
At the barre, dancers begin working with more refined port de bras, grande plié, 4th position, and higher leg extensions. Combinations grow longer and more connected, and foundational movements progress to include double frappé, faster petit battement, and battement fondu with greater control. Students also learn the major classical poses—1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th arabesques—and begin exploring more sustained adage work.
In the center, Grade 2 introduces essential turning skills such as pirouettes, piqué turns, and chaîné turns, along with traveling steps including tombé pas de bourrée, pas de chat, pas de basque, and expanded petit allegro featuring jetés, assemblés, and linking steps. These elements cultivate clean placement, musical timing, and expressive coordination as dancers progress toward intermediate-level classwork.
This instructional video gives teachers clear demonstrations of each exercise along with Janice Barringer’s detailed explanations, ensuring a smooth and well-structured transition into intermediate-level work.
Video Playtime: 1 hr, 22 min.
Note: The music heard in the video appears as part of the instructional demonstration only. A separate classroom-ready music recording is available as its own MusicWorks product.
