Janice Barringer created this in the traditional “barre and center demonstration” style, a form commonly used in ballet schools that blends classwork with presentation. This high-intermediate to advanced combination is designed for serious ballet students.
Rather than presenting a traditional choreographed dance with elaborate costumes and sets, the demonstration transforms familiar ballet class material into a performance. Steps and exercises normally performed at the barre and in center are arranged with added flair and energy, giving the audience the feeling of watching a ballet class while still enjoying a polished stage presentation.
Costuming can remain simple—typically leotards and tights, with the option of skirts and subtle hair accessories—allowing the dancers, technique, and movement to remain the focus.
The choreography is set to the beautiful orchestral music of Shostakovich, creating a lively showcase for advanced ballet technique and musicality.
